US Military Begins Delivering Gaza Aid via Floating Pier Built With ‘Herculean’ Effort

Trucks have begun moving aid into Gaza using a giant temporary pier constructed by the U.S. Central Command, with help from the Israel Defense Forces.

Vehicles began moving humanitarian assistance ashore early Friday morning (Gaza time), with the United Nations taking charge once it left the pier—transporting it to World Food Program warehouses where it was readied for distribution.

“This is an ongoing, multinational effort to deliver additional aid to Palestinian civilians via a maritime corridor that is entirely humanitarian in nature,” said the military announcement.

“It will involve aid commodities (including food, water, medicine, and temporary shelters) donated by a number of countries and humanitarian organizations.”

For instance, in the first shipment that went ashore, the U.K. says it included 8,400 temporary shelter kits made of plastic sheeting—soon to be followed up with 900 tents, 9,200 hygiene kits, and five forklift trucks.

U.S. President Joe Biden ordered the pier project, which was estimated to cost $320 million, after insufficient humanitarian aid was entering Gaza by land.

The U.S. also pressured Israel to open a pair of crossings to deliver aid into the territory’s hard-hit north in recent weeks, according to the AP.
