Barcelona’s architectural gems: Exploring Gaudí’s masterpieces

Barcelona has some of the best architecture in the world, and much of that can be credited to the architectural genius, Antoni Gaudí. Let’s take a look at some of his most impressive work!

Casa Vicens

An ideal place to begin your architectural journey is Casa Vicens, as this was Gaudí’s first major project.

The exterior of the house immediately captures the attention of passersby due to its red, white, green, and blue colour scheme. Despite having a relatively bold appearance, Gaudí was able to still maintain a subtle charm that matches the tranquillity of the Gràcia neighbourhood.

A visit to Casa Vicens is guaranteed to be a truly enriching experience, as it offers an insight into Gaudí’s creative techniques, including the use of colours, tiles, and geometric lines.

Although the building was constructed more than 130 years ago, Casa Vicens remains a beloved spot among both locals and tourists. A variety of events and workshops are also organised throughout the year, allowing visitors to channel their inner artist.

With regards to tickets, there are a variety to choose from, ensuring you can have the perfect experience.

Casa Batlló

One of the city’s most famous streets is Passeig de Gràcia, which is home to an extensive selection of luxury shops and the iconic Casa Batlló, one of Gaudí’s most impressive houses.

The house itself was not actually built by Gaudí, however it was completely remodelled by him in 1904 after the homeowner, Josep Batlló, wanted his house to stand out from the rest. Gaudí was given complete creative freedom, and despite facing a few issues with the local government regarding certain architectural features, the house was successfully redesigned into what we now know as Casa Batlló.

Over the years, the house has been owned by various people, however it is now owned by the Bernat Family, who have opened its doors to the public, allowing visitors from all over the world to appreciate Gaudí’s work.

We highly recommend purchasing the Visit + Concert: Magical Nights ticket, which includes entry into the house, a glass of delicious cava, and an amazing rooftop concert. Doesn’t that sound spectacular?

Park Güell

One of Barcelona’s biggest attractions is Park Güell, which was also designed by the incredible Antoni Gaudí. This incredible green space should be on everybody’s bucket list when visiting the city.

Originally, there were plans to turn the area into a housing estate, however, there was a lack of interest from buyers, therefore it was turned into a large private garden, thus creating Park Güell!

As you explore the expansive grounds you will discover colourful mosaics, beautiful arches, incredible views, and two quaint houses (one of which was lived in by Gaudí). Park Güell is truly beautiful and was classified as a World UNESCO Heritage Site in 1984, further proving its significance.

For those wanting to truly immerse themselves into the Gaudí journey, consider purchasing either the group or private guided tour, as these will allow you to gain a deeper understanding of the park’s history.

Casa Milà (La Pedrera)

Another one of Gaudí’s masterpieces, Casa Milà (La Pedrera) can be found along Passeig de Gràcia.

The exterior of this architectural gem differs quite a lot from Gaudí’s other structure as it lacks colour, and instead boasts a curved facade with grey tones. Its unique appearance offers visitors an alternative insight into Gaudí’s creative mind, and makes it stand out even more.

Casa Milà features a beautiful interior that promises to leave each visitor in awe. Boasting undulating ceilings, detailed ironwork around the doors and stairs, an array of wall paintings, and many more architectural methods, it is simply incredible. These unconventional techniques create a truly magical atmosphere within the building, and continue to inspire artists and architects to this day.

A variety of tickets are available for Casa Milà, however for those wanting to have a truly memorable experience, we recommend the Night Experience ticket, which is a guided nocturnal tour around the house, and includes a glass of cava and a unique and immersive visual show on the rooftop. What more could you ask for?

La Sagrada Familia

Undoubtedly, La Sagrada Familia stands as Gaudí’s most famous structure. The one-of-a-kind church was first designed in 1882 and is set to be finished in 2026, however, you don’t have to wait until then to experience its beauty.

Gaudí integrated a variety of architectural styles throughout the construction of the church, and upon visiting, you will notice numerous features which are commonly associated with Gothic churches and classic Greek sculptures. La Sagrada Familia has seven apsidal chapels, numerous complex columns, and a variety of beautiful stained glass windows, all of which add to the ethereal beauty of the structure.

The general entry ticket is the only option for admission into La Sagrada Familia, however the experience of visiting the church is extraordinary in itself, therefore additional tickets are not required.

Gaudí’s work has had significant influence on modern architecture and is a primary attraction drawing visitors to Barcelona. Visiting his masterpieces will continue his incredible legacy and is an excellent way of exploring Barcelona’s wonderful architectural gems.
